CHAPTER ELEVEN

THEODORE

I can’t take my eyes off Jen as we sit and eat our meal. The outdoor solar lights have come on, bathing the deck in a soft glow. The setting sun’s beauty lingering in the sky. It has nothing on the girl across from me.

“You’re making me nervous,” she says, pink filling her cheeks.

“You have no idea, do you?” I ask. I shake my head, overwhelmed with the intensity of my feelings. She just got out of a relationship. I garnered that much from the wedding brunch. It’s recent too. How recent, I don’t know. “Did your ex never tell you how beautiful you are?”

More color suffuses her face, her eyes dropping to her plate. That’s answer enough for me. Reaching out, I claim her hand, my fingers rubbing along her palm. “He was an idiot.”

Her tongue darts out to lick along her upper lip and I unintentionally tighten my hold on her hand. “He was young,” she says in a soft voice.

“Age shouldn’t matter in terms of appreciating what’s right in front of you.” I loosen my hold and tangle my fingers with hers. “Is it painful to talk about him?” I ask, trying to keep my voice free of the tension that’s coiling within as I think about a man hurting Jen in any way.

Her head whips up, and she lets out a laugh. “No. Not at all. We were just two people still finding ourselves. I would have broken up with him if he hadn’t beaten me to it.”

The tension in my body eases. “So, I don’t have to worry about him popping up to get you back?”

Jen snorts, her shoulders shaking with her efforts to fight back giggles. “Hardly. And even if he did, why would I go back when I’m seeing a man who cooks like this?” she gestures to the empty plates. “Everything was amazing.”

“Thank you. I enjoy cooking, though it’s much nicer cooking for someone else.”

“Why aren’t you married, Theo?” Jen asks, her face open and honest, her blue eyes pulling me in.

“I hadn’t met the right woman,” I say, unwinding our fingers. I stand up and begin to gather up the dishes.

Jen springs up, grabbing at my hand. “You’re closing down on me,” she says.

“I am, I’m sorry.”

She looks out over the water. “You said you wanted to get to know me better. It goes both ways.”

I look down at our hands, her slender fingers wrapped around my much larger ones. “Let’s get dessert and go out on the dock like you wanted and then we’ll talk.”

Jen turns her gaze back to me and smiles. “Let’s.”

We take the dirty dishes inside and I rinse and place them in the dishwasher. Jen gets our dessert ready. The heavenly scent of chocolate washes over me and I can’t help eying up the thick frosting dividing the three colorful pink layers of the cake.

I tuck two of the citronella torches under my arm and grab a lighter, and then we take our plates and bottles of water out to the deck and sit in the chairs facing out on the water.
